Causes & Triggers

Viral Infections

Viral upper respiratory infections are one of the most common triggers of asthma. These infections cause inflammation of the nose and upper airways. This inflammation may trigger coughing, wheezing, and actually progress to an asthma attack. While you can't always avoid catching a cold or developing an upper respiratory infection, use of your daily maintenance asthma medications may prevent development of asthma attacks during the cold and flu season.
