Although emotional factors are not the cause of asthma, emotional stress can sometimes trigger an asthma attack. Symptoms of asthma may develop after crying, laughing, or yelling in response to an emotional situation. Emotional stress itself, such as anxiety, frustration, and anger, can also trigger asthma symptoms.

During an episode, anxiety and panic should be controlled as much as possible. Try to remain calm, relax, breathe evenly, and take appropriate quick-relief asthma medications.

Treatment should be aimed at controlling the asthma. When asthma is controlled, emotional stress will be reduced and other emotional factors can then be dealt with more effectively. Be sure to communicate with your provider if you have asthma and feel that you are experiencing severe stress.
